Department of Automobile Engineering: The Department of Automobile Engineering was instituted in the year 1949.MIT offers quality education in Automobile Engineering, which is evident from the fact that multi-nationals are selecting Chennai as their destination to start their mega car projects. The Department also involved in the programmes of "CENTRE FOR AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH AND TRAINING" (CART). The Society of Automobile Engineers, headquatered in USA, credited this institute as "MIT of India". The research findings of the staff members are regularly presented in national and international conferences and journals.

The Department offers a 4 years B.E(Full time) & B.Tech(Part time) undergraduate programme in Automobile Engineering. For those who have passed the Plus Two examinations and appeared for TNPCEE (Tamilnadu Professional Course Entrance Examinations).
U.G core subjects include Automotive Petrol and Diesel Engines, Automotive Chassis,Automotive Transmission, Vehicle Body Engineering, Vehicle Dynamics, Automotive Pollution and its Control,Automotive electrical and electronic systems,Computer Aided vehicle Design
ME postgraduate programme in Automobile Engineering of 2 years for the candidates with a valid GATE score and based on their ranks. A few students are admitted under Non-GATE category also, based on their ranks in the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) conducted by Anna University.The first year PG programme designed on Advanced Theory and Design aspects.The second year is devoted to Project work (Phase-I and Phase-II) and approximately 75 % of the students take live industrial problems and work in the industry concerned to complete the project. This offers an oppurtunity for the University-Industry interaction. The rest 25% of the students carry out the project in the Department.
