The institute focused on niche courses from its very inception. It was the first institute in India to have specialized courses (e.g. Instrumentation Engineering & Aeronautical Engineering). It is also the only college in India that offers a Post Graduate Engineering degree in Avionics. Computer Sciences & Information Technology were started only recently, keeping in mind the increased demand for IT courses in India. Admission into the institute happens through the TNPCEE, although the situation might change next year.
